Yankee Stadium

People heading to Yankee Stadium seem to think that the Major Deegan Expressway is the only way to get there. Also, they tend to follow the directions given on signs posted along the way-not necessarily the best advice. For example, if you are heading northbound on the Deegan, the first stadium sign you will encounter is at Exit 4(East 149st, Stadium). Most people get off at that exit, but those in the know go one more stop to Exit 5 (West 155St, Stadium, Manhattan). As long as you arrive a half- hour early and the game is not sold out, this exit will save you time and lead you directly to the parking garage.

If you are coming from the north or New Jersey, take the Harlem River Drive southbound in lieu of the Major Deegan:

  • Take the George Washington Bridge to the southbound exit for the Harlem River Drive.
  • Go less than a mile to Exit 23 (W. 155St.)
  • From the exit go up the hill and make a left at the first light onto 155 th St.
  • Proceed across the Macombs Dam Bridge and, at the Bronx end, follow the signs to the parking areas at Yankee Stadium. (Use only designated stadium parking areas, to avoid potential vandalism and/or parking tickets.)

Stadium Traffic

For major sports or entertainment events you should always assume that a high percentage of first-timers, and even those that have been there before, know just one way to get to the arena. These people almost always stay on what appears to be the most direct highway route. For a poorly attended game this is fine, but when there’s a sellout – forget it! You can easily miss an inning or two sitting on an expressway. If you’re familiar with the local streets, you’ll find that these little-known routes move surprisingly well.
